Wifi Internet Phone

WiFi Internet Phone

One of the newest ways to make better use of your Internet service is to use it for your Wi-Fi phone service. When you use Wi-Fi internet phone services such as those offered by Skype of AT&T you can have a quick flawless connection anywhere there is Wi-Fi access. The Wi-Fi service works with the iPhone, Blackberry, Motorola, Samsung, LaptopConnect and several other phone service providers. Once you have made the initial Wi-Fi Internet phone connection, you can automatically connect with that Wi-Fi hotspot anytime you are in range (usually 150 feet); although this may vary with the frequency band (channel).

You can also use a connectivity card to take advantage of wireless Internet access over a cellular phone system. This works on the premise that as long as you receive a cellular signal that is compatible with your network, you will have Internet access. This will allow for more options, but it also requires an alternate service for remote access.

Wi-Fi Internet Phone Considerations

Since Wi-Fi hotspots number well into the millions worldwide, a Wi-Fi internet phone can be a great way to save money on phone costs. Keep in mind, however, that some phones such as those by Spectrum, do not work consistently worldwide. Conversely, most of Europe allows for 2 additional channels than those allowed in America for the 2.4 GHz band.

Also, if an area is saturated with Wi-Fi signals, there can be access issues and interference with other device’s use of access points due to overlapping channels. In fact, items such as microwaves, Bluetooth, security cameras, cordless phones and other devices that work on the 2.4 GHz band have been known to cause WiFi internet phone interference.

Basic Wi-Fi Components

The components for Wi-Fi phone service are: an embedded RouterBoard, a mini PCI card, a Wireless access point (WAP), wireless adapters, wireless routers, and in some cases, a network bridge.
